My mission-To empower parents and children to harness social media safely and productively
Social Media Parenting is what I call "Digital Parenting"
Cyber safety and digital citizenship are my primary concerns for students in the 21st century. With digital advancements being made so fast, parents can be tempted to throw caution to the wind when it comes to on-line safety. Even for a computer teacher, it is a challenge to keep up with each new technological development that our kids are experiencing. For a parent, it can be even more difficult.
Several summers ago, I was doing research for a graduate class called "Cyber Dangers: Beware." That class became the driving force behind my communication attempt with you, the parent. In short, while doing research, I came across crime after crime involving children where technology was used as a method to cause harm.
I realized that educating children is no longer my primary focus. Kids will always be ahead of the curve, leaving their parents wondering what they are doing online. Sometimes until it is too late, then there is a crisis to overcome. Parents need to play a key roll, but many are intimidated by technology and feel that their children know far more than they do.
This effort started with a parent "Google Group" I created. The Google enabled me to teach and teach my parents as well as the students. I also created a dedicated section of my website that only parents could access. This closed section of my site hosted the movies I use in class, and the lessons discussions that followed. The wonderful experience of teaching my "Parent Google Group" and is what inspired Transparently Teaching and Parenting 2.0. I hope this site serves its purpose and is of use to you.
